For this comparison, we’re looking at the base trims of each car. The only option we’ve added is all-wheel drive for the 5 Series, since it’s standard on the A6, and this allows us an apples-to-apples comparison. This price similarity makes the difference in performance all the more glaring. The A6 comes with a standard V6 engine, one that produces quite a bit more power than the standard four-cylinder engine in the 5 Series. There is an optional V6 for the 5 Series, which brings performance up to the same level as the A6, but it comes with a hefty price increase. And while we’re talking about performance, adaptive air suspension is an option on the A6, providing both superior handling and superior ride comfort, depending on what the situation demands.
You might think that, with such similar pricing and such a power deficit on the part of the BMW, the 5 Series would at least come well equipped, but that’s not quite the case. Ventilated leather seats are available for the 5 Series, but neither the ventilation nor the leather comes standard, whereas both are standard on the A6. Audi has made adaptive cruise control a standard feature across the whole model lineup, but BMW will still charge you extra for it, even on a non-entry-level model like the 5 Series. And while both cars come equipped with navigation and auto-dimming side mirrors, only the A6 includes real-time weather and traffic info with the navigation and passenger-side mirror auto-dimming. Lastly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) publishes an annual list of the safest vehicles on the road, known as Top Safety Picks. Within this list is the even more selective group of Top Safety Pick+ models. Audi does exceptionally well with these awards, netting almost triple the number that BMW received, and the A6 is a Top Safety Pick+. The 5 Series isn’t on the list at all.
