Now in its third generation, the Audi Q5 has spent the last two decades thrilling drivers across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky with its versatility, premium comfort features, and advanced technology. All the while, a surprisingly-powerful engine and quattro all-wheel drive keep things stable and sure-footed on the road, allowing those other features to grab the headlines. Naturally, such a vehicle has inspired several competitors in the compact luxury SUV segment, prominently including the Lexus RX and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Let’s take a look at how those three models compare.

Though the Lexus brand has made luxury and tech features its signature, the Audi Q5 delivers far more of the standard features that are typically considered markers of those genres. For one thing, genuine leather seating is standard in the Audi, something that stands out as exceptional in just about any comparison. Those seats are heated, of course, and include eight-way power front seats and a standard driver memory function. The Q5’s massive 14.5-inch infotainment display is another obvious point of separation. It includes wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, of course, and feeds a standard ten-speaker sound system that can be upgraded to a top-shelf Bang & Olufsen® system with 3D sound. In short, no detail of the Q5’s cabin was left unconsidered, leading to an elite luxury experience — whether you pay for upgrades or not.

There’s little doubt that the Audi Q5 out-performs both of its rivals as well. Though the Mercedes-Benz GLC is able to get from point A to point B at roughly the same speed, the Q5 truly separates itself on how it handles. Its shorter wheelbase helps produce a smaller turning radius, more responsive steering, and superior maneuverability, as compared to both the GLC and the Lexus RX. It’s also the only one of the three that comes with standard all-wheel drive, though the famed quattro system, which ensures traction and a superior driving feel, even in slippery conditions.

On top of all of that, the Audi Q5 has more cargo space than its rivals, a complete package of driver assistance features, and includes three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Winner: Audi Q5

The thing about luxury is that there’s no way to fake it; you either have it, or you don’t. And the Audi Q5 certainly has it right out of the box, without needing to pay for the highest trim levels or upgrade packages, thanks to things like its leather seats and massive infotainment display with included navigation. On top of that, it offers a fun, responsive experience behind the wheel, with plenty of power and the confidence of quattro all-wheel drive. The Q5 clearly is the sort of vehicle that offers something for everyone.
